Constant Self-Improvement: A How-To Guide


Constantly improving on yourself is a good way to keep your life ever fresh, ever evolving and ever exciting.

The purpose of life is growth and when we stop growing, we begin to stagnate and die.

Self-improvement on a constant basis always gives us something to always aspire to and progress to look back on.

Constant self-improvement is not to be confused with a relentless pursuit of perfection or competition with others.  The only person you should compare yourself to is the person that you were yesterday.

Although constant self-improvement may sound like a time and energy suck, it is honestly really easy to implement when done on a small-scale regularly, with the aim of getting 1% better every single day.

WORK TOWARDS A GOAL

Have an end goal in mind.  Then break it down into very small daily tasks that bring you a little bit closer to that goal.

 

BE OPEN TO CHANGE

Growth and progress do not come from comfort zones, and for your life to progress forward, you should be open to change and growth. 

Be stubborn about your goals, but flexible about how you reach them.

FEED YOUR MIND: READ. LISTEN. LEARN

From reading a book, watching a YouTube video or listening to a podcast, there is honestly no excuse for not learning or staying informed. 

Instead of listening to trash radio on the way to work or school, listen to a podcast on your chosen topic instead.

Take advantage of free courses and information that you'll find online or at your local library.

When you can, enrol on a quality course in your chosen topic. 

Consider it an investment in yourself and your future.

 

INDULGE A PASSION OR TWO OR MORE

It is okay to take a break and allow yourself to regenerate.  Go away on a short trip, take a spa break or go on sabbatical.

Whatever they are, revisit those passions and activities that you used to enjoy, but no longer practice.

 

WATCH YOUR INNER CIRCLE

The old cliche is so true - we really do become like the 5 people we spend the most time with. 

Make sure that you only have quality people within your circle; people who are compatible with your aspirations and on the same trajectory in life as you are.

Not everyone is meant to remain in your life forever, so don't be afraid to prune your social circle.  Dead weight and negative people will only keep you weighed down.

 

RECEIVE FEEDBACK & CRITIQUE

Skip these two types of people who really do not have your best interests at heart:

  • People who only tell you what you want to hear,
  • People who only offer negative criticism

Instead, get feedback and constructive criticism from those who have your best interests at heart.

 

Do not forget to occasionally look back on your achievements and congratulate yourself on the progress you've made.

 

Start now.  Do something today that your future self will thank you for.
